Empowered grew from one question: What if benefits enrollments were easy? Everyone struggled with insurance. Brokers needed more time with clients, HR managers drowned in paperwork and employees couldn't enroll in a basic medical plan without hassle. We wanted to provide everyone with a simple, transparent enrollment process. A process that made it easy for someone to pick the best benefits for their family.
We aimed to make that vision a reality – and we delivered. In 2000, we launched our first consumer-driven healthcare programs, sprinting ahead of the industry by prioritizing people.
I like the size of the company and the teams. You get to handle a lot of different types of things – you don't normally get that type of freedom in a bigger company.
Back-end software developer (thing).
I started doing feeds as a junior developer. I moved into a team lead, senior developer position. Then, I moved to working in a different department.
Rotisserie chicken.
The energy of everyone here – there’s so much enthusiasm and new ideas. It’s a cutting-edge culture.
Innovative. Diverse. Detail-oriented.
I’ve been a Senior Java developer.
Streaming services. Before, I had to wait in front of the TV to watch a show. Now, whole seasons are available at once.
I like working at Empowered because we’re not just a team – we’re a family. That’s really important to me because we’re spending so much time with one another. On our team, it’s “no man left behind” because we’re only as strong as our weakest link. And we just have fun.
Chaotic. Demanding. Exciting.
I started as an account manager, and then I moved to managing the account managers. Now I’m a business process manager, leading a team.
That’s not fair, I want all kinds of superpowers… But, I think I would like to be invisible. When it gets extremely heated, I want to be able to disappear. I could hear what people say, stay two steps ahead – and then all of a sudden, we would have what you need. And then I want to be able to fly, so I can fly over traffic.
I appreciate the autonomy that I am given to accomplish what is necessary for the company. There is a large degree of distributed responsibility, and I think people trust that each departmental component is capable of conjuring the most appropriate solutions for any given problem.
On a more personal note, I have made some of my best friends working here at Empowered, and they remain a reason for me to stay.
Build Insurance Plans.
I began my career at Empowered as a Business Systems Analyst in 2013, when the company was in its infancy with under 50 employees. After building and providing support for a variety of insurance plans for our platform and other partners, and many long late-night deployments, I became a Senior Business Systems Analyst in late 2017.
Arnold Shortman, from Hey Arnold! He was pretty cool.
For 17 years, we've created technology that does what people need it to do – and then gets out of the way. Intuitive, useful software remains our focus as we ask: what's next? Who else is losing valuable time with their friends, family and business partners because of needless paperwork and complex, confusing processes? And how can we use technology to give them back that time?
We started as a small, humble team, working hard to turn ideas into action. Now, as a growing team of nearly a hundred, we encourage. We experiment. We imagine new possibilities. We ask: what if?
